César Álvarez

Born in 1973, César Álvarez is currently considered by international critics as one of the strongest values of orchestral conducting. It was initially formed at the Oviedo Conservatory of Music (Spain), to then continue his conducting studies in Madrid with Maestro Benito Lauret receiving an intense human and musical formation. He later moved to Moscow to study Opera and Symphonic Conducting at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with the prestigious maestro Dmitri Kitaienko.

César Álvarez is invited to work with some of the leading orchestras in the world as Russian National Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Vanderbilt Symphony Orchestra (USA), Spanish Radio Television Symphony Orchestra, Entre Rios Symphony Orchestra (ArgenCna), Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra, Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra, Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra, Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Murcia Region Symphony Orchestra, Principado of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, Albanian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, Brno Symphony Orchestra (Czech Republic) and many others.

Maestro had shared stage with some of the top world musicians as Denis Matsuev (piano), Ekaterina Mechetina (piano), Nikolay Petrov (piano), Alexander Rudin (cello), Alena Baeva (violin), Ainhoa Arteta (soprano), Marc Grauwels (flute), Viktor Tretyakov (violin), Liana Isakadze (violin), Nino Machaitze (soprano), Valentina Lisitsa (piano), Gregory Kunde (tenor), etc.

César Alvarez is every season touring among many countries, as People Republic of China, USA, Russia or South America. In addition to a busy schedule of concerts, devoted a part of his time teaching, serving as Professor of orchestral conducting at the Murcia State Conservatory and as guest teacher at Vanderbilt University (Tennessee, USA). At the age of 28, in 2001, in competition and as unanimous choice of all the musicians, he was appointed as Principal Conductor of the Tomsk Philharmonic Orchestra (Russia), where he has been Principal Conductor until 2011 and named after Honorary Conductor. Also has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of Murcia State Symphony Orchestra (Spain) from 1997 until 2006. César Álvarez has a long and fruitful artistic and personal relationship with the film composer Edward Artemiev, leading as Musical Director in many of his projects.

César Álvarez was selected to represent Russian Symphonic Music in the framework of the Russia-Spain Dual Year celebrated throughout 2011. The commemorative concert took place in Madrid (Teatro Monumental) in September 2011 with the Radio Television Symphony Orchestra with the Concerto n2 for violin by S. Prokofiev (the premiere of this concert was in Madrid in 1935) and with the presence of S. Prokofiev’s great-great grandchild.

Maestro Álvarez is regularly invited to be part of the juries in the most important competitions in the world, highlighting the International Competition “S. Rachmaninov” (Moscow 2022) or the Tchaikovsky International Competition for young musicians.
